National Nutrition Month

Welcome to March! Did you know that today marks the very beginning of National Nutrition Month? It's true. March is, according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, all about "making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits." If that's something you've been meaning to do, now is the perfect time for you to start DOING it. And you can start by learning about how your plate should look. Because in today's world of processed and fast food, it can be very easy to build a bad meal. And bad meals wreak havoc on your fitness achievements.

Remember: Half of your plate should be filled with leafy greens and veggies, while the other half is divided between decent proteins and whole grains. Trust me, it's entirely possible to make an appetizing meal in this way. Think clean, think good-for-you. Think delicious. Think you can't? I bet if you really put your mind to it, you can come up with a better taco than Taco Bell. Let's be honest.

Remember: Activity, in all its forms, absolutely counts toward your physical fitness. So start somewhere, anywhere and progress from there. If you can only run for five minutes, then run for five minutes and add another when you feel ready to—rest assured you can apply the same saying to strength training. If you can only lift 5 pounds in a bicep curl, do so and add more when you're ready.

March, in all its glory, is your month. Even if you've already been workin' hard at the gym and in the kitchen. There's bound to be one part of your routine you thin you need to change.  So I say to you, and to everyone else that thinks they need to make a change:

Question: What diet and/or fitness changes have you been thinking about making?

Hi Tara, one of my goals for March & 2012 is to focus on freshness in foods. This means I want to cut out a lot of the oils and dressings that I use and try to focus on bringing out the flavors of the vegetables and spices. I also plan on trying more vegetables that I have yet to try!
