Official Product Review: Sparkling ICE Water

The following post contains Amazon Affiliate links. Click, don't click...it's up to you.

Water is obviously important. Without it, we'd truly be dead. We suck it down to stay hydrated, bathe in it and grow our food with it. But truth be told, at least when it's a beverage, water can be very boring. I get sick of it and I'm sure you do, too. As a result, I am constantly looking for creative (and equally hydrating) replacements. Don't get me wrong, you can never really top water. Nor can you truly replace it. However, you can switch it out on occasion—but you have to be careful. Many alternatives (think pop, certain sports drinks) are nothing more than sugar and calorie bombs. But there are options out there. You just have to read labels. And when the folks at TalkingRain Beverage Company sent me a few bottles of Sparkling ICE Naturally Flavored Sparkling Water, I did just that.

Sparkling ICE is a zero-calorie beverage that "combines fresh mountain spring water, natural fruit juices and six essential vitamins and antioxidants." While the list of ingredients is short, it does contain a few red flags that require some explanation:

1) Sucralose. I'm honestly not a fan of anything but sugar because certain substitutes affect my stomach in a way that doesn't feel too hot. That might not be the case for you so I can't completely X the product because of it.

2) Maltodextrin. It's kinda like a corn syrup, defined across the Internet as a "caloric sweetener."

3) Mannitol. A sugar alcohol, so yet another sweetener.

But how does it taste? Sparkling ICE comes in six different flavors: Black Raspberry, Kiwi Strawberry, Lemon Lime, Orange Mango, Pink Grapefruit and Pomegranate Berry.

Had they given me a bottle of the Pomegranate Berry, I would have gone into that one head first, but they didn't so I opted for the Black Raspberry . Now, I don't drink sweet beverages that often, so I found this drink to be incredibly sweet. Like, Cherry Pepsi and Vitamin Water sweet. It surely was a tasty treat. Keyword: Treat. I'm not sure that I would recommend this beverage as a post-workout form of hydration, but if your hankerin' for a pop—especially if you want a fruity Faygo—pick this instead.

Every bottle has "just the right amount of bubbles," but without a lot of the excess gunk and calories found in pop. It's all the fizz without most of the fuzz. There's green tea extract, plus vitamins and antioxidants—although I'm not sure how abundant the vitamins and antioxidants actually are, but every last bit counts.

Check Costco, Sam's Club, Jewel, Walgreens and more if you're interested. You can also order a few bottles off Sparkling ICE Naturally Flavored Sparkling Water. Cost? Pretty comparable to similar beverages on the shelves, well...at least when you buy it right off those market shelves.

Question: If you've ever had Sparkling ICE water, I want to know what you think. Also, if you had every bottle right in front of you, what flavor would you choose?

Note: I was not compensated for this review, but was given what you see above to write this review. rest assured, all opinions are my own as they always are.

I've only had pomegranite berry, and it's SO good. I was trying to find out if they were good for you or not. Thanks for your blog. It gave me some insight. :)

My grocery store had them 10 for $10 so I was inclined to try them especially when I saw there were no sugar or carbs calories involved. As a type 2 diabetic I wondered if there was something "BAD" about them. But my usual diet green tea or diet coke was becoming a bit boring. I'm always looking for fruity diet drinks to no avail. I have now tasted the Kiwi Strawberry and the berry flavor you mentioned, they are quite sweet but a well needed break from the norm. I've enjoyed the two I have had thus far and hope to catch that sale and try them all. I have the other flavors in the fridge but I only bought 4 and not ten. Lucky for me you can get the deal price without going all in!

We live by a sam's club and they sell packs of them there and they are super good, they also give you energy if you are feeling run down, drink one of these and you will get you energy back and be ready for the rest of the day! They are very good and come with a lot in a bottle.

I enjoy drinking this instead of Soda actually. my favorite one would be the orange mango. Right after that would have to be the pomegranate berry. I haven't had a problem drinking these. I tried them early this year when they were ten for ten and I love them!

Anonymous said...

I tried these when they went on sale because I find it hard to drink just plain watdr even though i know its good for you.....They are SOOOOO goooood! My favorite is the orange mango and the pomegranate berry...lemon lime is ok...the raspberry to me tasted a little off and havent tried the kiwi strawberry. I like these far better than other "flavored" water ive tried.

I have been looking for something other than Coke because I really drink too much! I saw these on sale at my grocer and decided to try them. I only bought two, Black Raspberry and Mango Orange. They both were pretty good but I prefer the Black Raspberry. I love that it has a lite fizz too!

I'm a diabetic and am curious on how there can be no sugar in concentrated orange juice or that how much of the sucrose is used in the product. Sucrose acts like sugar especially with diabetics. It does taste great but it sounds to good to be true.

anonymous said...

The pomegranate berry is the only one i dont like it has hardly any flavor to it. I love all the other flavors though :)

I just found this product last week and was really excited. I don't like soda and juice is sometimes too much so it was nice too see something in between. The flavor was a bit strong and the slight aftertaste was off puttIng. I love the idea of this but I wish they would try something like stevia (all natural, plant based sweetner with no calories) instead of splenda. So close just not quite there to win me over.

I tried a bottle of Coconut Pineapple. It was delicious, so delicious that I was suspicious. How is this zero calories? Are there chemical additives I should avoid in this drink? Yours is the first review of the product, and I found it helpful. While I will not substitute this drink for water after a workout, I will buy it for a low-calorie change of pace.

adailydoseoffit said...

Flavored waters are touch and go. This one was okay, but still not the healthiest...nothing beats water and real fruit. Try smashing up some pineapple in your water bottle for an all-natural flavor boost! That way, you won't have to worry about chemicals at all!

I used to drink Sprite, Sierra Mist and Grape sodas.  Now that I am a diabetic I tried to find a drink without Aspartame in it.  I love Sparkling Ice.  I has a great taste and it has "fizz".  I bought all the flavors except Rasberry but I've only tasted Orange Mango (so so), Lemon lime (is good) and Pink Grapefruit is delicious.  I will try Kiwi Strawberry next.  I wish they could make a Peach flavor.  The drinks are so good and I had never heard of them until a week or so ago.

I just discoveed Ice and like it. Does taste a bit salty to me though I can't find a sodium count in the miniscule writing on the bottle. Guess I'll cool it until I can find out how much salt is in it.
Good change up from soda, which I don't care for at all.

I have been a diet coke freak all of my life..like 6-10 a day!! I never thought I would ever find something as good or better. The Black Rasberry is sooo good I keep looking at the label to see if there really isn't any sugar in it. I knew I would have to stop drinking Aspertane someday but I couldn't have imagines a substitute like this ever coming along. Have it with a ton of ice and any soda addicts will be VERY surprised! Great product.

I love Sparkling Ice and my favorite flavors are orange mango and the pink grapefruit. Walmart now sells them in packs of 9 for 6 dollars..a great deal!

Helen said...

I really don't like the taste of Black Raspberry. It tastes like medicine!

Cathy said...

I absolutely love them, and it makes drinking water and giving up soda tons more easier than going plain water alone. My husband has finally found something he can replace beer with...yes, you heard me. Beer. Whatever works, that's what I say.

Health Fit said...

I love this product, I don't drink soda's so when I do want a treat I choose this drink. I love the grapefruit, and the Kiwi Strawberry. Everything now days has some form of bad ingrediants so this is a nice in between product.

Anonymous said...

The Black Raspberry is sooooo goood. It's like crystal light with a fizz. It's so good though that I'm suspicious they've hidden the sugar content under some fancy name or something.

Alicia said...

It is sucralose, not sucrose. Sucralose is what splenda is made from.

Alicia said...

There is no sodium in ICE drinks

I really love sparking ice water. I quit pop because of it but the only thing that I was nervous about was the carbonation.

I also gave up drinking DIET soda about three years ago. I was getting alot of UTI's because of it, so I thought I would try an alternative. I started drinking water and I got so bored. It was just so bland. I even tried mixing it with lemon and it didn't really do it for me. However, I Love the Sparkling Ice drinks. My favorite is Orange Mango and Peach Nectarine.

They have a peach nectarine and it's awesome!

I love them I really don't see how tyeres nothing bad in them. They taste more sugary than kool aid yet there's no sugar but hey I'm all for that. I recommend them

D Sharon said...

But WHERE does the mountain spring water come from? What location, state, etc.? I just wrote to the company as well. This is a main point I think. Just saying mountain spring water is not enough. Is it a safe water source? Seriously, you need to tell us where the water is from. Too many companies get their water from questionable sources. If it's all good, let us know and we'd love to order some. I was about to order from Fresh Direct but need to know the answer. Thanks

adailydoseoffit said...

I'm not sure where it comes from! If you hear back from the company, please let me know!

Fred Jones III said...

They also now have Peach Nectarine and Crisp Apple. Pretty good, in my opinion. I like it, but limit myself to one bottle per day. It costs $1 to $1.75 here in Michigan. Thanks for your review!

Fred Jones III said...

Always check with your doctor or dietician regarding new products. Take the bottle to your next appt.

Are they appropriate for kids to have? I have been trying to find answers but nothing definite except that there have been no studies on green tea extract for kids. I have an 8 year old that wants to try them out.

adailydoseoffit said...

I'm not sure what the rules are in terms of green tea extract and children. Ask your pediatrician?!

I too am a diabetic and I am trying hard to wean myself off the Diet Dew. I have to say that I sooooo love Sparkling Ice! I have only tried Pink Grapefruit and Black Raspberry but they are both so delicious! I am drinking Pink Grapefruit as I type this. I wish I could find a 24pk of these two flavors for about the same price as a 24 pk of Diet Dew. If I could find it that cheap, I would throw down the Dew easily. I buy the Sparkling Ice for $1.00 a bottle at the Dollar General store I live right next to. That comes out to $12 for just a twelve pack!!!! A bit too pricey for me to drink it regularly.

I am in love with it, my favorite is the Kiwi Strawberry. My Aunt introduced me to them just this week and I can't get enough, but i don't use it as a water substitute I still drink 3 big water bottles a day and when doing my yoga I drink water before during and after. This is just my treat that happens to be healthy..ish...I don't really know how healthy it is, but I know its better than soda and tastes really yummy....although right now I am drinking a Sprite I LOVE Sparkling ice and the price is great.

Missing carbs said...

I too, was excited when this product came out. But being carb intolerant, I notice that, after drinking sparkling ice---even in small quantities mixed with mineral water, I feel unwell--as though I have ingested sugar. Can it really contain fruit juice and be carb free, as it claims?

tina.p said...

I would like to suggest to sell each individual flavors in multipacks, myhusbands suggestions, there are some flavors in the pack he won't drink. thank you

I am on my 8th day of no soda, which happens to be a huge accomplishment for me. I found these drinks to be the only saving grace for me to come down from my soda 'high'. I love them. The lemonade tastes like a crisp refreshing summer drink with the right amount of bubbles. I think the bubbles are what I crave the most. This drink has helped me tremendously and eventually, I would like to back off them as well. But for now, it HAS to be better than a chemically charged Coke. :)

teddileah said...

I think the only reason I drank soda was because of how fizzy it was. This drink makes up for it, so I'm going to start drinking it from now on.

Melissa said...

I am type 1 diabetic and was kinda worried about the splenda... I took a bottle to my endocrinologist last week and she saw no problems with the contents, it has no negative impacts on my blood sugars that I have noticed. my favorite is strawberry lemonade!

Cg said...

Depends which plant produces the bottle. I work for a plant the produces Sparkling Ice and our water comes from privately owned wells in the Poconos that are incredibly closely monitored and filtered.

youareallliars said...

I went "low carb" and stopped juices and sodas. Love these! 2 weeks into buying them at Food City, they stopped selling them. Also...$1.00 each? COME ON!

Michelle said...

I'm diabetic as well and it hasn't affected my blood sugar at all. I love them. I drink it all the time. They are a great alternative to sugared sodas.

Michelle said...

I'm Type 2 and it doesn't raise my blood sugar at all. I think every diabetic is different and different things affect your BS. I drink them everyday and my BS is fine.

Becky Kline-Simmons said...

I love these drinks, especially the Pomegranate Blueberry and the Black Raspberry. I sent some to my daughter who has been a diabetic for almost 40 years. She loved the taste, but found that it did raise her blood sugar.

Damn I checked the ingredients on the back for aspartme, so if sucralose is pretty much the same as splenda, then it must contain aspartme! Argh

Pat said...

Need to know caffeine content of the green tea.
Love the product but blood pressure was elevated
and only change in lifestyle was the "Ice". Doctor
questioned the green tea's caffeine. Notice question
way back but never found response. Anyone know
caffeine content.

adailydoseoffit said...

If you look on the Sparkling Ice website, you'll see a question in the FAQ that addresses this. According to the company, there isn't any caffeine in their green tea extract.

adailydoseoffit said...

Rest assured, this product is gluten-free. You can read this in the FAQ on their website.

adailydoseoffit said...

Splenda is a brand of sucralose. It is completely unrelated to aspartame. Aspartame is a low-calorie sweetener as well, but the two are not the same.

adailydoseoffit said...

There isn't any caffeine in ICE. You can read this information on the Sparkling Ice website in the FAQ.

adailydoseoffit said...

Tina, you should check the company's website for an address to send in this request as I am unrelated and have no power to make this change...but I think it's a good idea!

adailydoseoffit said...

Maybe it's the sucralose. I sometimes get a stomach ache when I consume too much low-cal sweetener...

Karenelainegraham said...

Love this new beverage...We were given a cooler of them on
our Golf Carts this week at the Stones River Power of Pink Golf
Tournament. The flavor was Orange Mango with the tiniest little bubbles
that provided a perfect combination of refreshment!

sandy said...

I'm SO peeved. I thought this was void of artificial sweeteners- then find it contains sucralose!!! Bad news. Looks like I have to stick to my plain or lime flavored seltzer water!!!

sandy said...

how about water? add a lime or lemon or use seltzer for the fizz

sandy said...

what's in it then?

sandy said...

not really!!! it's made with artificial sweetener which is a man made chemical and not something your kids should drink. get them used to good ole water- and off the need for sweet flavors in their drinks.

sandy said...

pretty much the SAME thing- a man made chemical which all should avoid. I to came here to find out about the ingredients and am disappointed to find out it contains sucralose.
WHY can't they use Stevia???? Plant based sweetener?? I'm waiting for someone to take the leap to a healthier sweetener!!

Amie said...

It taste in my opinion, good. But not good enough. Sucralose always is not my favourite, one is because it's just not great taste as the sugar one, two is it isn't any better than real sugar, in fact it is worse. But I like this product anyways.
Also, if I have all flavours of sparkling ICE, I would choose all. BECAUSE THEY ALL TASTE GREAT.

Rita said...

I love the stuff, especially lemon and black raspberry. It tastes great even when the carbonation has disappeared. Diet soda and other sparkling water taste pretty bad when they are flat, so I don't drink the whole bottle, and that is wasteful. I suppose the company does not use Stevia because it would cost more, but I would prefer Stevia to sucralose.

I started drinking these a couple weeks ago. I noticed that I was having stomach issues. I’mnot sick, still eating and feel fine but right below my sternum I have this irritation and I’m burping like crazy. 7 days ago I stopped drinking them and the discomfort slowly dissipated over the week and I’ve felt better. So today I went and drank about half of one and wham, stomach started up again. So I googled the drink with the words stomach pain and it seems many people are having issues with this drink.

I sit here typing in discomfort because I had half of one
about 2 hours ago. I’m not nauseas or vomiting and in fact I’m about to have
dinner but I am pretty sure these drinks don’t mix well with most people. Have
some flat diner ale and drink a lot of green and black tea. That’s what I do
now…

Lauryn said...

Im actually drinking one right now my favorite is the kiwi strawberry. I dont drink them very often but your right when say water just gets to boring.

Me said...

I think it's amazing, but it's too good to be as healthy as it sounds on the bottle. I've had all the flavors, and I prefer the lime or the orange.

paigelouise97 said...

I am in love with these drinks, my favorite is the lemonade ones though, are those different then the regular ones? Are the bad for you? I need answers! haha thank you. (:

teach said...

A colleague of mine calls them "fizzy lifting drinks". We enjoy them at the end of a hard day of teaching to perk us up.

Buckmeister said...

Aspartame is not bad for you unless the producer of said aspartame produces It poorly, and it is impure aspartame. I truly believe all of these chemicals can save us, but shit some ARE bad and probably ARE impure, why can't they actually focus on getting their shit straight, and advancing humanity to the next shift. I would hate for us to keep evolving into this less desire able shit strain we are on this planet.

Rebecca0600 said...

LOVE this product! I don't like water unless I'm dying of thirst, so I drink a couple of these a day. I do wonder if they are bad for me as I don't know much about the sweeteners. My favorite is the Orange Mango, but I enjoy them all.

this is good stuff

Miss Dazzey said...

When you say it is sugar free, are you saying this because it is not listed on the bottle, or does it say it on the bottle - sugar free? I thought the Sparkling Ice was sugar free until today when I noticed at the very bottom of the label - sweetened with Splenda. Then I read the ingredients closer... Sucralose & Maltodextrin will raise blood sugars. I am a diabetic so obviously I need to not be drinking these all day - everyday. :-(

I drink these on the weekend as a drink to pair with my lunch and my high school has also taken all sodas out of their menu and replaced them with sparkling ice. Everyone at my school drinks like crack cocaine! It is a truly addicting drink. I favor Kiwi Strawberry and Pink Grapefruit!

I'm actually currently drinking strawberry kiwi sparkling ice water. I LOVE THIS FLAVOR THE BEST!! Is there any good flavors? I want to try to mango one. The lime one is okay. And the black raspberry wasn't okay.

I had to go off Diet Dr. Pepper because of the sweetener, "stomach" issues. But these cause no problems and I LOVE them. By far, my favorite is coconut/pineapple. I found them in local groceries for $1 each, less at Sams. By far, my new favorite. Flavors are light & refreshing, no bitter aftertaste, not too sweet, aromatic & actually smell like the fruit.

Why do people call this a "soda alternative"? It IS a type of soda, which is another name for a carbonated beverage.
